This anthology that accompanies the video and performance art series Ghost 2565: Live Without Dead Time features ten new stories in English and Thai by artists and writers that catalyze other subjectivities. The texts follow trails of stories to bring forth those in the margins and read their tales in congruity with the exhibition and performances. By reclaiming disinherited times and spaces—from mundane moments during a day outside to jungles of cyclical temporalities, landscapes, and languages—Anthology is an invitation to look into and outside oneself. The book’s own subjectivity performs a slow self-examination, be it with respect to a neighbour or voyeurship itself, to see how we become more visible in relation to others. Some subjects spiral in these stories, while others attempt to find a way out.&nbsp;Structured narratives are complemented with texts that are almost spectral, pitting logical consequences against fragmented consciousnesses. Bodily sense returns only when the limits of language are reached, where one must confront protagonists’ choices. The book closes with a return to the familiar, to family, place, and subjecthood. A meander through a maze of yesterday’s lost love is followed by a grasping at order and tradition amidst a cacophony expectations. Dissipating and forming words become worlds; Ghost 2655: Anthology is an entry into gaps within overlapping narratives, seeking ways to invent and inhabit them with writing by Orawan Arunrak, Ivan Cheng, Uthis Haemamool, Travis Jeppesen, Phu Kradat, Li Shuang, Sophia Al Maria, Duanwad Pimwana, Sathit Sattarasart, and Emily Wardill. Diane Severin Nguyen is an artist who lives and works in New York. Her photography hybridizes the organic and synthetic into amalgam sculptures, held together by the parameters of a photographic moment, and her video work expands that moment into a layered cultural and historical context. Nguyen earned an MFA from Bard College, New York and BA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Recent solo exhibitions include Diane Severin Nguyen, Huis Marseille, Amsterdam and IF REVOLUTION IS A SICKNESS, SculptureCenter, New York, Renaissance Society, Chicago, and Contemporary Art Museum Houston (2022). Recent group exhibitions include 58th Carnegie International (2022–23); Greater New York 2021, MOMA PS1; and Made in L.A. 2020. Nguyen’s films have been screened at Yebisu International Festival for Art &amp; Alternative Visions, Tokyo; International Film Festival Rotterdam; Berlinale, Berlin; and New York Film Festival.&nbsp;

Diane Severin Nguyen expands on her nuanced investigation of contemporary politics and their complicated expressions and embodiment in&nbsp;IF REVOLUTION IS A SICKNESS.&nbsp;Beginning with the dreary landscapes of Warsaw, the video follows an orphaned Vietnamese child as she associates and attempts to discover her own identity within a nation as well as ideological belonging through K-pop. The protagonist, Weronika, is played by a Polish-Vietnamese teenager Nguyen discovered on social media. Embodying the stereotypical position of outsider, she navigates complex transnational political alliances formed during the Cold War and the struggles of the Vietnamese diasporic population currently living in Poland. “If I don’t become an artist then I will just remain a victim”—the lyrics suggest a call for emancipation, to configure possibilities and live in a new image. A narrated rumination sourced from various texts about revolution on collective action and the paradox of liberation and alienation moves into a performance of a pop music video that gives the work its title. The insistence to find an identity comes to the fore as protagonist Weronika and members of her adopted dance troupe members “lose themselves to the new image” as sung in the song’s lyrics. It becomes imperative to ask on whose terms an identity is formed, and how then one finds their name within a nation, a regime, in a force ever so encompassing. Caught between nostalgia for revolutionary fervor for pasts yet realized and present-day pop culture co-optation of every ideology, the self is fraught and must transition, attach and reattach themselves through the whirlwind of media. IF REVOLUTION IS A SICKNESS’s presence in Bangkok is ever relevant, where histories are rewritten with each passing day and the substance of political trauma steadily rises yet is surpassed by a regime of image production that dominates the political and popular imagination. &nbsp;Co-produced by SculptureCenter, New York and Renaissance Society, Chicago. In this platform for mutual exchange twelve artists are given the opportunity to discuss their work with leading figure in film and contemporary art Emily Wardill, a Ghost 2565 participant artist.&nbsp;During this day-long event, Wardill delivers a comprehensive reading of filmmaking in a masterclass lodged in today’s most pertinent questions and in her recent work on cinema’s potential to access imaginary forces—and the implications of that in our relationship to images.&nbsp;The “imagined image” connotes experiences overshadowed by myths, their ghosts, as well as utopias, concepts of the nation-state, dreams of all sorts where materiality that is never concrete nevertheless insinuates objects and forms. These ideas form the basis of the day’s discussions. Additionally, Wardill provides professional insight into the development of emerging artistic practices that challenge the boundaries and established categories of art production. Masterclass participants are asked to present their work, or work in progress, and together with Wardill explore concepts such as the outward ability of asking questions and how to preserve dialogue within works.
