This anthology that accompanies the video and performance art series Ghost 2565: Live Without Dead Time features ten new stories in English and Thai by artists and writers that catalyze other subjectivities. The texts follow trails of stories to bring forth those in the margins and read their tales in congruity with the exhibition and performances. By reclaiming disinherited times and spaces—from mundane moments during a day outside to jungles of cyclical temporalities, landscapes, and languages—Anthology is an invitation to look into and outside oneself. The book’s own subjectivity performs a slow self-examination, be it with respect to a neighbour or voyeurship itself, to see how we become more visible in relation to others. Some subjects spiral in these stories, while others attempt to find a way out.&nbsp;Structured narratives are complemented with texts that are almost spectral, pitting logical consequences against fragmented consciousnesses. Bodily sense returns only when the limits of language are reached, where one must confront protagonists’ choices. The book closes with a return to the familiar, to family, place, and subjecthood. A meander through a maze of yesterday’s lost love is followed by a grasping at order and tradition amidst a cacophony expectations. Dissipating and forming words become worlds; Ghost 2655: Anthology is an entry into gaps within overlapping narratives, seeking ways to invent and inhabit them with writing by Orawan Arunrak, Ivan Cheng, Uthis Haemamool, Travis Jeppesen, Phu Kradat, Li Shuang, Sophia Al Maria, Duanwad Pimwana, Sathit Sattarasart, and Emily Wardill. Emily Wardill lives and works in Lisbon. She has had solo shows at venues including Rialto6, Lisbon (2022); Secession Vienna (2020); Kohta, Helsinki (2019); Bergen Kunsthall (2017); Museu Calouste Gulbenkian (2017); INDEX, Stockholm (2014); de Appel arts centre, Amsterdam (2012); MIT List Visual Arts Centre, Cambridge, MA (2010); and Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2007–08). She has participated in 19th Sydney Biennale (2014) and 54th Venice Biennale (2011). She was Artist in Focus at EMAF, Osnabrück, Germany in 2022 and has shown at Forum Expanded at the Berlinale (2021) and the New York and London film festivals (2017, 2014, 2010) among others. She has won awards including the EMAF (2021), Leverhulme (2011), and Jarman (2010) and her work is held by the collections of Tate Britain, London; mumok, Vienna; FRAC Champagne-Ardenne; Saastamoinen Foundation, Helsinki; Arts Council Collection, Great Britain; and many others. Wardill has taught across the globe and is currently doing a practice-led PhD at Malmö Art Academy.

Emily Wardill has long been invested in deconstructing cinema to explore the disconnect between movement of time and bodies, images, histories, and narrative structures.&nbsp;Night for Day imagines a fictive kinship in Portugal, composed from a series of interviews with Isabel do Carmo, founding member of an armed resistance in the 70s, and two young astrophysicists, Alexander Bridi and Djelal Osman, who run a Lisbon-based start-up that develops software for computer image recognition. Set against instabilities of the two different historical junctures, the film stitches together fragments to unpack the variances of past political ideals and a present-day techno utopia, a binary epitomized by this phantasmal mother-son relationship.&nbsp; The make-believe family takes up residence in the home of architect Antônio Teixeira Guerra—completed in the same year the fascist government fell in 1974. Shot in the magic hour, the time Guerra chose to invite guests, Wardill probes the illusory moment when perception breaks down, where objects are caught in the interplay of clarity and semi-darkness. The film collages found glitchy footage of actresses cast as automations, on the verge of disintegrating, as a counterpoint to resist the latest computer-image processing technology. In the film, Do Camo says, “we’ve been experiencing continuous defeat. We must think in terms of an obvious utopian future.” Employing punctures and nonlinearity, Wardill’s work sheds light on female subjectivity, political labor, and performativity while questioning how new utopias can be formulated, haunted by historical visions and a techno-teleology reality to come.&nbsp;Courtesy the artist and Carlier Gebauer, Berlin.&nbsp; Produced by Stenar Projects, Lisbon.

In this platform for mutual exchange twelve artists are given the opportunity to discuss their work with leading figure in film and contemporary art Emily Wardill, a Ghost 2565&nbsp;participant artist.&nbsp;During this day-long event, Wardill delivers a comprehensive reading of filmmaking in a masterclass lodged in today’s most pertinent questions and in her recent work on cinema’s potential to access imaginary forces—and the implications of that in our relationship to images.&nbsp;&nbsp;The “imagined image” connotes experiences overshadowed by myths, their ghosts, as well as utopias, concepts of the nation-state, dreams of all sorts where materiality that is never concrete nevertheless insinuates objects and forms. These ideas form the basis of the day’s discussions. Additionally, Wardill provides professional insight into the development of emerging artistic practices that challenge the boundaries and established categories of art production. Masterclass participants are asked to present their work, or work in progress, and together with Wardill explore concepts such as the outward ability of asking questions and how to preserve dialogue within works.
