World Travel Service is Thailand’s first travel agency. It started over sixty years ago with its headquarters in Charoen Krung Road—the first paved road in Bangkok. Conceived to capitalize on the booming foreign market, it signaled the modernization of Bangkok’s Old Town, a district of trade and commerce first established to present a facade of the modern nation-state to the encroaching colonial powers. World Travel Service is symptomatic of the shifting landscape opening up to foreign investors, tourists, and labor, a narrative of a city in conflicted transition. It was originally positioned on a road that sustains the growing city in proximity to the recently closed Hua Lamphong train station, a terminal that connects and expands Bangkok’s presence and control over neighboring provinces. The area becomes a site of intersecting modes of travel and migration both through class and geography. A vision of a future now in stasis, it stands abandoned as a relic of narratives past.
